State Parks & Forests in the Skylands

Allamuchy Mountain & Stephens State Park  – located three miles north of Hackettstown. These two parks are adjacent to each other, separated by the Musconetcong River, which has some of the best trout fishing in the state.

Bull’s Island Recreation Area – located in Stockton, within the D&R Canal. For camping, check in a the main office.

Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park – The main canal runs from Trenton to New Brunswick. The feeder canal stretches from Trenton north to Frenchtown, Hunterdon County, along the Delaware River.

Farny State Park – located in Rockaway Township, Morris County.  This forested wilderness connects watershed lands and is crossed by an old logging road. Streams, mixed oak-hardwood forest and swamps comprise the park.

Hacklebarney – located in Chester, Morris County. The freshwater Black River cuts its way through this rocky park, cascading around boulders in the hemlock-lined ravine.

High Point State Park – located in Sussex, Sussex County. The view from High Point Monument is a spectacular panorama of rich farmland and forest, soft hills and lush valleys in three states.

Hopatcong State Park – located near Stanhope, Sussex County.  Lake Hopatcong is the focal point of the park, which is at the southwest end of the lake. The lake was originally created as part of the Morris Canal, the chief means of transporting coal, iron and zinc across New Jersey in the 1860s.

Jenny Jump State Forest – located in Hope, Warren County. Panoramic vistas of the Highlands and the Kittatinny Mountains and Valley to the west, and scenic views of the Great Meadows in the east dramatically greet the visitor who climbs to the top of Jenny Jump Mountain.

Kittatinny Valley State Park – located in Andover, Sussex County. Glacial lakes, limestone outcroppings, former railroads, and a small airport are features of Kittatinny Valley State Park. Lake Aeroflex and Gardner’s Pond form part of the headwaters of the Pequest River and are excellent for fishing and boating.

Round Valley Recreation Area – conveniently located off Rt. 78 in Lebanon, Hunterdon County. The brisk blue waters of the reservoir attract swimmers, boaters, fishermen, picnickers and campers to its scenic shore.

Spruce Run Recreation Area – conveniently located off Rt. 31 in Clinton. Surrounded by the rolling hills of Hunterdon County, this recreation area is popular with picnickers, swimmers, fishermen, boaters and campers.

Stokes State Forest – located in Branchville, Sussex County. The breathtaking panoramic view from Sunrise Mountain along the Appalachian Trail rewards the hiker who has trekked up the steep mountainside.

Swartswood State Park – located just south of High Point State Park, Sussex County.  This park is well known for its great fishing and tranquil surroundings.

Washington Rock State Park  – located in Greenbrook Township, Somerset County.  The strategic location of this park made it a valuable lookout point during the Revolutiony War for George Washington in 1777 when the British army was moving toward Westfield. From the vantage point of this natural rock outcropping, Washington had a thirty-mile panoramic view of the valley and was able to instruct his troops to circle behind the British troops and cut off their retreat.

Voorhees State Park  – located in  Glen Gardner, Hunterdon County, near High Bridge off Rt. 31. This park served as a camp for the Civilian Conservation Corps - Franklin Roosevelt’s program to get people back to work during the Depression. They planted trees and constructed shelters, picnic sites and trails throughout the park.

Wawayanda State Park  – located near Vernon, Sussex and Passaic Counties.  Wawayanda’s quiet charm appeals to hikers, campers, swimmers and boaters. Forested hills surround Lake Wawayanda creating a restful backdrop for canoeists, boaters and fisherman. Steep mountains challenge both casual and serious hikers. A twenty-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail runs through the park.

Worthington State Forest – located adjacent to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Warren County. Some of the most rugged terrain and splendid views of the state are found in this forest.
